It can be recalled that Mr Amaechi and the Sokoto State governor where among the then ruling party, Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), who left to the APC prior to 2015 general election.
Tambuwal who was then Speaker of the House of Representatives contested for
the state’s governorship and won on the platform of the party.
The Minister who said the federal government was aware of the governor’s plan of defecting from the party. He revealed that Tambuwal's decision to leave APC,is because of his plans to run for presidency.

Meanwhile, he stated this on Friday while addressing reporters after the inspection of Itakpe-Ajaokuta-Warri project in Delta State.
Amaechi also mentioned the governor of Kwara State, Abdulfatah Ahmed, as one of those already known to be planning their exit from APC. Ahmed had on recently hinted of his intention to decamp.

According to the Minister Of Transportation:
“No matter what you do, the governor of Sokoto will leave naturally because he had the ambition of being the president in 2019 and even if you take a chicken to him he will still leave. It is same with Kwara,".

“These are people you expect they will leave. They left with members of the National Assembly but they came from the areas that the President is very comfortable. Do you honestly believe that the President will lose election in Sokoto? It is one of his comfort zones,”.
He insisted that no matter the exit of some members from APC, the ruling party, President Muhammadu Buhari will still win the 2019 election.
“The next persons that left are from Bauchi and if you bring the president on a sick bed in Bauchi he will win. He has never lost election in that state. If you bring him on a sick bed in Kano, he will win.”

Mr Amaechi added that those people found defecting were doing so because they've come to understand that theor  political ambitions will not be considered in the party. He continued by saying that: “Again, you will say that it happened during our time but we sold our candidate one year but they are doing it six months to the election. It was clear who will be APC candidate one year ahead of time.”
